What the Golden Kubestronauts Taught Us About Grit

Mélony Qin Published on April 24, 2025 0

Stars Aren’t Born, They’re Made. In the world of cloud-native innovation, it’s easy to focus on big names and how AI is shaping every single aspect of the technology these days. But behind every CNCF milestone is a quiet force: people who show up, contribute relentlessly, and grow with every commit. So, What the Golden Kubestronauts Taught Us About Grit? That’s what we’ll talk about in this post: shaping the future of open source, one line of YAML at a time.

CNCF Kubestronauts is More Than a Title

For a long time, passing a CNCF certification has been a difficult task because it requires a lot of dedication to learn Kubernetes and cloud-native technologies, and it takes hands-on experience to pass most cloud-native certifications, which is different from cloud provider certifications.

On top of all that, it’s a long learning curve and lots of fun ! You see, by showing up to contribute to open source, when no one’s watching, when there’s no instant feedback loop, when burnout is real, that takes something special.

The Kubestronauts program wasn’t built for hype.

It’s not some feel-good participation badge.

It’s a signal. A symbol of consistency, resilience, and straight-up grit.

Because showing up to contribute to open source : when no one’s watching, when there’s no instant feedback loop, when burnout is real, that takes something special.

Now CNCF’s latest cosmic upgrade? This where Golden Kubestronauts comes into play. People who didn’t just pass a couple certs. They completed all of CNCF’s certifications plus LFCS.

Who are Kubestronauts?

Let’s break it down:

Kubestronauts: Those who’ve passed all 5 Kubernetes certifications: CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA, and KCSA. For those aren’t familiar, you may ask what that means :

  • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA): Validates your skills to install, configure, and manage Kubernetes clusters in production.
  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD): Demonstrates your ability to design, build, and run cloud-native applications on Kubernetes.
  • Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS): Focuses on securing container-based applications and Kubernetes platforms during build, deployment, and runtime.
  • Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA): Entry-level certification that covers core concepts of Kubernetes and the cloud-native ecosystem.
  • Kubernetes and Cloud Security Associate (KCSA): Tests foundational knowledge of securing cloud-native applications and Kubernetes environments.

Who are Gloden Kubestronauts ?

Golden Kubestronauts: Those who’ve passed every CNCF certification currently available : about 13 of them! And plus LFCS will receive the title of Golden Kubestronaut for life, as well as these additional benefits. That’s: CKA, CKAD, CKS, KCNA, KCSA, PCA, ICA, CCA, CAPA, CGOA, CBA, OTCA, KCA and LFCS. So, besides the top 5, also a number of certifications covers the Kubernetes ecosystem :

  • Prometheus Certified Associate (PCA): Validates foundational knowledge of monitoring with Prometheus and the observability ecosystem.
  • Istio Certified Associate (ICA): Demonstrates your understanding of Istio service mesh fundamentals and its use in securing, controlling, and observing services.
  • Cilium Certified Associate (CCA): Covers core networking, observability, and security concepts using Cilium in Kubernetes environments.
  • Cert-manager Certified Associate (CAPA): Tests your knowledge of automating TLS certificates and managing certificate lifecycles in Kubernetes.
  • GitOps Certified Associate (CGOA): Demonstrates your grasp of GitOps principles, tools, and practices for deploying applications in cloud-native systems.
  • Cloud Native Buildpacks Associate (CBA): Validates understanding of Buildpacks and how they transform code into container images in a Kubernetes-native way.
  • OpenTelemetry Certified Associate (OTCA): Covers observability basics using OpenTelemetry for metrics, traces, and logs in cloud-native environments.
  • Kubeflow Certified Associate (KCA): Demonstrates foundational skills in deploying and managing machine learning workflows using Kubeflow on Kubernetes.
  • Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS): Proves your ability to manage and operate Linux systems, including file systems, networking, and system services.

It’s not just about test-taking.

It’s about mastery.

About taking your learning journey seriously and then helping others along the way.

Golden Lessons: What We All Can Learn

Here’s the truth:

You don’t need to be the smartest person in the room.

You just need to keep showing up.

That’s the lesson we keep hearing from Golden Kubestronauts. And here’s what it looks like in practice:

1. Shine by Showing Up

No one becomes a YAML wizard overnight.

These folks didn’t grind through certifications in a week, they showed up day after day, after work, after kids’ bedtime, on weekends.

And the consistency paid off.

2. Get Comfortable in the Quiet

The open-source world isn’t always loud.

You commit code, fix a bug, drop a comment in a PR, and sometimes no one even replies.

But what it takes to be Golden Kubestronauts? They kept contributing.

Even when it felt like no one was watching.

3. Grit > Hype

We all love the launch-day posts and flashy demos.

But the reality?

Sustainable impact in cloud-native comes from people willing to grind through the boring parts, debug endlessly, and write documentation that actually helps someone.

4. Learning Is a Lifestyle

These aren’t just test passers.

They’re mentors, meetup speakers, blog writers, and open-source maintainers.

They live this stuff.

Their message? Don’t stop at the cert.

Keep building. Keep sharing. Keep learning.

One of the most admirable examples is from Łukasz Adamski, who wrote about his journey of learning Kubernetes and became a Golden Kubestronnant.

Why This All Matters

Because in this world of AI-powered-everything and “hot new tech,” it’s easy to forget:

Community still matters.

The humans behind the PRs and blog posts still make the biggest difference.

And grit, the quiet, relentless kind is still the most underrated superpower in tech.

So the next time you see a Kubestronaut badge, remember:

It’s not about the logo.

It’s about what it took to earn it.

And more importantly what they’ll build next.

Looking Forward

Shaping the future of open source, one line of YAML at a time, won’t be an easy task! But we’re here for the most challenging task until we make it happen. So, I really hope this blog helps those looking to upskill on Kubernetes in 2025!
