How a 9 to 5 Corporate Job Escapee Turned Entrepreneur

Mélony Qin Published on June 24, 2024 0

It’s come to this. May 30th, 2024, marks my exact one-year anniversary of letting go of my 9–5 corporate job and starting my own company. I’ve learned a lot during that time, which is why many things resonated with me when I read this book called Pathless Path by Paul Millerd. It taught me how to explore what matters in this personal journey of self-discovery. Let me share with you how a 9–5 Corporate Job Escapee Turned Entrepreneur.

The Default Path vs Pathless Path

This book contains many personal stories of Paul Millerd’s journey of self-discovery, traveling in different countries, freelancing, and dealing with uncertainty. It’s a relatable guide for those considering leaving their jobs, embarking on an unconventional path, or searching for a new and better way to live and work in this ever-changing world.

Just like Paul, Through my own experiences over the past year, I’ve come to appreciate the insights Paul shares, offering a fresh perspective on modern work and life. I’ve found empowerment in those constant struggles, and importantly, I’ve learned how to navigate uncertainty and redefining what success means to me.

What I love the most about his approach to being a creator and building a community, which he describes as ‘The real work of your life’: finding things you want to keep doing and unleashing your inner creative spirit. This realization led me to decide to start my entrepreneurial journey and how I turned into an entrepreneur.

Awakening

You know, spending over a decade in a 9–5 corporate job in the tech industry, I saw this as a default path that would lead to my retirement. Just like Paul, even two years ago, starting my own venture seemed unimaginable.

After years of following a prestigious career path in consulting, he began to question the meaning and value of his work. This is where he reached a ‘breaking point’. Similarly, these days, when many big tech jobs at FAANG are no longer prestigious, many of us are forced to reevaluate our values and priorities. Personally, this has led to a profound shift in my perspectives: it’s not about how others define see how successful you are but how you see yourself about you for what matters to you the most.

For Paul, the real awakening happened during a sabbatical year when he allowed himself to explore different interests and creative pursuits. This period of self-discovery led him to realize that true fulfillment lay not in climbing the corporate ladder to achieve corporate success but in embracing a path of creativity, experimentation, and personal growth.

This awakening was not just about leaving behind the default path but also about embracing uncertainty, creativity, and a new way of living and working that truly resonated with my inner self.

“This is what the pathless path is all about. It’s having the courage to walk away from an identity that seems to make sense in the context of the default path in order to aspire towards things you don’t understand.
― Paul Millerd

Breaking free is difficult but possible

Regardless of why or how people begin their entrepreneurial journeys, there are just so many things to take care of. The initial stages are always filled with numerous unpredictable challenges.

This is why it’s important to shift away from the default modes of success and towards your own definition. For instance, in “Pathless Path,” Paul Millerd describes how he transitioned from a conventional career to a more fulfilling life by prioritizing personal growth and community over traditional success markers. I resonated with this because, Deep down, who doesn’t want to create something unique and impactful to other humans?

He started small, focusing on meaningful projects and collaborations rather than chasing big, immediate profits. In practice, I also think it’s best to run my startup lean and bootstrap wisely: by starting lean, I mean using minimal financial resources. Bootstrapping means reinvesting our earnings to grow the business carefully. This approach helped him build a supportive community and redefine what success meant to him.

It’s to experiment in new ways, to remix your own path, to develop your own personal definition of freedom, and to dare to have faith that it will be okay, no matter how much skepticism, insecurity, or fear you face.”

Create your own weather

Learning to reinvent yourself is crucial but definitely not easy. It takes a lot for us to stay adaptable and open to change. But it allows us to evolve with the market and your own personal growth.

Millerd’s journey of freelancing and traveling across different countries showcases how embracing uncertainty and experimenting with various roles can lead to personal and professional growth. Embracing abundance means shifting from a scarcity mindset to one where opportunities and resources are seen as plentiful. This positive outlook fosters innovation and resilience.

Creating your own weather involves building an environment that reflects your values and principles and encourages creativity and collaboration. Millerd’s approach to redefining success, not in terms of monetary gains but in terms of meaningful work and relationships, serves as a guiding example. Developing your own principles gives you a solid foundation to make decisions, guiding you through the uncertainties of the entrepreneurial journey.

By focusing on these aspects, we can play the long game, ensuring sustained growth and fulfillment in our venture. And please remember that every conversation matters, as it could lead to valuable opportunities for growth and support in the entrepreneurial journey!

Looking forward

Entrepreneurship is a journey of exploring and excelling. It’s not all about me and my journey but, more importantly, what I learned from those experiences. It is not evident that everyone can turn their startup dreams into reality. I personally had a lot of struggles, but I feel empowered to live every day, and I love the possibility that I could create something that will make a difference.

I hope my personal sharing will be helpful for new entrepreneurs or those who are on the 9–5 corporate job and want to make a positive impact.
