OpenAI’s Secret Path to AGI: Gamble or Genius?

Mélony Qin Published on September 16, 2025 0

What if I told you OpenAI just hit the reset button on the future of AI? Ever since ChatGPT dropped in late 2022, OpenAI has been in a race to release one record-breaking model after another. Well, until OpenAI suddenly wiped every old GPT overnight. Now they’re betting everything on a secret 5-step plan to human-level intelligence. This isn’t just another upgrade, it’s the biggest gamble in AI history. Stick around, let’s unpack some interesting facts here.

O3 is smart, but brain power != intelligence

Only two months after releasing O1, OpenAI dropped O3, a reasoning model so powerful it shocked the AI world. O3 scored 25% on one of the toughest math tests, where no other AI had scored higher than 2%. Even more jaw-dropping, it hit 88% on the ARC benchmark, a gold-standard test designed to measure progress toward Artificial General Intelligence. For context, O1, their previous best, only managed 32%.

How? O3 uses something called test-time compute (TTC), which is the amount of computational power used by an AI model when it is generating a response or performing a task after it has been trained… but at a steep cost, well, up to $1,000 per task. Compare that to a human PhD student who might solve it for five bucks worth of pizza and coffee. That’s how you go bankrupt with brilliance.

AI researchers suggest that O3 still makes mistakes on simple tasks. But for academia, finance, and specialized industries? It’s a glimpse of the future if they can make it affordable. The big question: is O3 paving the way for scalable, everyday AI, or are we climbing a curve that only gets steeper from here?

But raw brainpower doesn’t always equal better experiences. Just ask anyone who’s tried having a “normal” conversation with AI.

GPT-4o is great but far from perfection

When OpenAI introduced GPT-4o, another breakthrough frontier AI model.  It’s powerful, it’s multimodal, but it’s not flawless. Have you ever tried talking to an AI assistant in real-time? Latency kills the flow. Imagine asking, “Hey, tell me about Paris,” and waiting awkwardly as the servers bounce requests back and forth. A few seconds later… finally, an answer.

That’s not conversation, that’s lag. The holy grail is clear: accuracy and low latency. AI that feels instant, human, local. That’s the breakthrough OpenAI and everyone else are chasing.

When we were just getting overwhelmed by all those powerful AI models, OpenAI was busy doing something radical: erasing its own history, like literally.

Did OpenAI just DELETE all old GPTs ?

When OpenAI dropped GPT-5, they literally pulled the plug on every other model. GPT-3.5, 4.0, 4o, even o3 gone overnight.

We are past the event horizon; the takeoff has started. Humanity is close to building digital superintelligence. The future can be vastly better than the present. By 2035, we could go from solving high-energy physics one year to space colonization the next.“ – Sam Altman

Let’s be honest: many, myself included, think we might be overhyping chatbots right now. After all, MIT reported that 95% of AI pilots at companies are failing. That’s proof AI isn’t intelligent enough without human enhancement.

And yet, we continue to see unwavering passion from investors, with billions pouring into AI. It may very well be the dawn of a new era. But let’s not kid ourselves, we’re still in a bubble. Perhaps even a bigger one than the internet bubble of the ’90s.

Looking forward

So, have we really passed the event horizon, or is this just another Silicon Valley storytelling?
