Don’t let limited resources hold your tech startup back

Mélony Qin Published on May 10, 2024 0

As a new tech entrepreneur, launching a tech startup with limited resources can be challenging, but don’t let resource constraints hold you back on your journey. In this blog post, let’s talk about some actionable strategies to help you overcome these obstacles.

Start lean, but bootstrap wisely

It’s unavoidable that we start a company without sufficient funding at the beginning. It is preferably to start lean, but bootstrapping wisely is key. Bootstrapping means starting with minimal financial resources and reinvesting earnings into the business. This fosters resourcefulness and prioritizes essential spending.

A clear timeline and roadmap

It is crucial to have a clear timeline for raising funding that aligns with the prototyping, implementation plan, and MVP. We need to be clear about the resources we have right now, when we need more, and how to acquire them to excel further. If your new tech startup is developing a new app, then outline milestones like designing & brainstorming, completing the prototype, launching the MVP, and scaling operations, aligning fundraising efforts with these stages.

MVP building

Once you have a clear product idea and business model, focus on building the minimum viable product (MVP). With the core feature, you can start acquiring the first group of users and learn how to monetize in the process. This helps generate initial income and proves that the strategy works when it comes to raising capital from angel investors. With those initial data points, prove your growth and have a roadmap to further excel.

Refining and iterating

The lean startup method lets you test with real users and save resources. By refining based on feedback it ensures steady growth. Continuously gathering insights and making small improvements helps meet market needs effectively. This method reduces waste and boosts the chances of finding the right market fit. It promotes innovation and adaptability, making startups successful in changing markets.

The Lean Startup: How Today’s Entrepreneurs Use Continuous Innovation to Create Radically Successful Businesses

Most startups fail. But many of those failures are preventable. The Lean Startup is a new approach being adopted across the globe, changing the way companies are built and new products are launched.

Eric Ries defines a startup as an organization dedicated to creating something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. This is just as true for one person in a garage or a group of seasoned professionals in a Fortune 500 boardroom. What they have in common is a mission to penetrate that fog of uncertainty to discover a successful path to a sustainable business.

Effective fundraising

There are many not-so-secret ways to get funding from private organizations such as startup accelerators, angel investors (VC firms), or government support, especially if your project aligns with their specific domain or demonstrates potential economic impact.

Startup accelerators

Accelerators play a vital role in supporting startup founders and builders on their entrepreneurial journey.

Capital-free accelerators

Capital-free accelerators like Google Startup School and Microsoft Startup Founder Hub offer valuable resources such as cloud credits ranging from 5K to 25K. Additionally, programs like Google Women Founders Program provide free masterclasses to assist in pitch deck development without requiring financial investment.

Accelerators affiliated with private VC firms

On the other hand, accelerators affiliated with private VC firms offer CEO/CTO training, pitch deck refinement, and networking opportunities with VC investors from diverse domains. While these programs provide extensive support, they typically require taking 5% to 15% equity from your startup. In Europe, startups may receive modest funding, such as 10K to 15K euros. Conversely, American startups have a higher chance of securing larger investments ranging from 200K to 500K dollars. You see in 2022 alone, AI startups attracted $47 billion private sector funding and in just 6 months in 2024, already a staggering of $35.5 billion was poured into AI startup. We also summarized the top 10 AI startups that raised over $100M in 2024.

Governments grants

Unlike accelerators, the good news is government grants do not require repayment or equity. However, they are very selective. To increase your chances of success, you must create a solid dossier, build a strong case, and prepare for interviews. For instance, a tech startup focusing on renewable energy solutions could explore grants offered by environmental agencies or energy corporations, enabling them to finance research, development, and initial operations without taking on debt or relinquishing ownership.

Community & Crowdfunding

Launching a crowdfunding campaign can be a promising avenue for securing funds for your tech innovation. Platforms such as Patreon, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, YouTube memberships, GitHub Sponsors, or even your own website offer opportunities to showcase your project to the public. By offering rewards or future product discounts in exchange for contributions, you can attract backers and raise capital. What’s more? a successful crowdfunding campaign not only provides financial support but also validates your idea in the market and cultivates a community of supporters who believe in your vision, and they could potentially become your beta testers later down the road.

Outsourcing Freelancers

Hiring freelancers offers several advantages, including cost management and access to specialized skills crucial for your startup’s growth. The upside is that freelancers offer flexibility, are available on-demand, and are paid per order.

Based on personal experience, in recent years, these two platforms have been observed overlapping each other. For instance, on Fiverr, you can place recurring orders with the same freelancer, along with long-term work discounts, while on Upwork, you can place gig orders. As the boundary between them is blurry, Fiverr stands out for its reliable payment system, efficient customer service, and better timeline control, thanks to its strict freelancer and client review system. Both parties are required to review their working experiences. As a freelancer, you can report if you don’t enjoy working with a client or remove their unfair reviews. Similarly, as a client, you could request a refund if the freelancer fails to deliver quality work, making it an overall better dispute resolution system than Upwork.job, which greatly aids in cost management. There are two major freelancer platforms, each with its own pros and cons. Don’t worry. They are not sponsoring my blogs and I always maintain a fair view of them:

Fiverr or UpWork

Fiverr and Upwork both offer services across various categories. Those services from graphic design to digital marketing, with their user-friendly interfaces and transparent pricing.

Fiverr is great for short-term projects. Freelancers are paid per gig, and it is easier to guarantee delivery timeframes due to efficient customer support. What’s interesting is also the Fiverr Select program, which offers discounts per order.

In comparison, Upwork is suitable for long-term work, offering both project-based and hourly-based contracts, it helps clients build relationships with their freelancers.

In recent years, these two platforms have seen overlap, such as on Fiverr where you can place recurring orders with the same freelancer, along with long-term work discounts, and on Upwork where you can place gig orders.

The boundary between them is blurry, and based on my personal experience, Fiverr offers more reliable payment and efficient customer service, as well as better timeline control due to its strict freelancer and client review system. Best of both worlds

As an entrepreneur seeking the best of both worlds, there is a solution: utilizing gig-based approaches. If you have a long-term position available, but harbor concerns regarding cost and quality control. You should consider opting for gig-based arrangements. This way it enables you to evaluate freelancers’ abilities and work styles before committing to a long-term contract.

Match with Co-founders

Finding a co-founder with complementary skills can be a game-changer when launching a tech startup. For instance, if you’re a skilled CTO, teaming up with a CEO with strong business acumen can lead to a dynamic partnership. A co-founder not only optimizes the workload but also provides essential moral support, personally called the “buddy effect,” and helps expand your professional network.

Equity is commonly used as part of compensation instead of a salary in the early stages, so fairness in offering it is important. Some startup accelerators facilitate co-founder matchmaking, emphasizing the importance of building trust from the outset. However, it’s wise to exercise caution when applying for roles, as some startups may not offer equity or salary during the probation period.

Effective Networking

When launching a tech startup with limited resources, leveraging your networks can be invaluable. Just like many other entrepreneurs, my first few beta testers were from my family and a group of friends. But more to develop and they all matter :

  • Leveraging networking and professional contacts is crucial for gaining insights, seeking advice, and potentially receiving support.
  • If you’re part of an accelerator, it’s essential to attend networking events. You can leveraage online platforms to connect with mentors, partners, and potential VC investors.

My take is that every conversation matters, as it could lead to valuable opportunities for growth and support in the entrepreneurial journey !
